than watched president obama -- then senator obama and senator mccain. tonight, of course, biden will be facing off against ryan. we'll see if there's as much interest on the part of the public but certainly on the part of the campaign there is intense interest. biden has to reverse the slide of support that has occurred since president obama's lackluster performance when he faced off against mitt romney in the first debate. and ryan will be trying to make sure he doesn't go off message that he maintains a very strict discipline with respect to mitt romney's positions. ryan of course has put forth some budgetary proposals that romney has said listen, i'm the guy in charge, i'm going to be the one who will make sure that the policies that are in place will be my policies. so ryan is going to have to make sure he is in sync with romney. but all in all, you know, romney has the momentum now and we'll see how it turns out tonight. >> you talked about the strategy. we are watching the presidential debate and there weren't too many sparks flying in that debate. do you think that's goi

president obama turned out to be? >> senator portman is very effective. the i think president obama and i both had a good chance to describe our respective views as to how we would do a better job. and i frankly think i benefitted from the fact that rather than having people learn about me by ads prepared by my opposition, they got to actually hear what i would do for myself. and i think that helped me. i think the president also got to layout his plans and people were able to make a comparison. as for rob portman, he's a pretty effective guy. >> were you surprised by the president's performance? >> i actually thought he described pretty appropriately and pretty effectively his policies. i just happen to disagree with those policies. when we talked about the economy, he really is not proposing anything he hasn't talked about for the last four years, which is another stimulus, hiring more government workers, picking winners and losers in industries that he favors, raising taxes. these are ideas he's had for some time, and frankly we've tested those ideas over the last four years and they h

president obama beat senator mccain. we saw mitt romney there just the other day with chris christie, the governor from new jersey. down here in virginia, also, 13 electoral votes, highly important for both men this year. southeastern virginia, four years ago, the president did very well, especially up here in places like, newport news city, 64-36% over john mccain. governor romney felt it was important to be there also over the past several days to make sure that he can, maybe dig into some of the voters that the president had four years ago. down in florida, such a huge pot of gold in this election yet again with 29 electoral votes. the other day we saw governor romney in pinellas county, that is the western side of tampa, north of st. pete here, a 54-46 winner four years ago. mitt romney was campaigning there in two other counties in florida where president obama did very well four years ago. trying to pick into some of that vote and pick off some of those voters that is coming up in 26 days. later tonight this is what you need to keep an eye on. 8:55 p.m. eastern time in prime ti
